QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT THE ARCTIC FLYING CLUB
Download this in a word document here: AFC-Questions-Answers.doc

1. What's the Club's fleet?

We have one aircraft, a 1975 Cessna 172, N5375R, parked at the west end of Row 33 on the east ramp at Fairbanks International Airport. It's a fully IFR-capable aircraft with long range tanks, the 180 HP Penn Yan conversion, and flies well.

2. What are membership and flying costs?

$200 one time membership fee, $150 of which is refundable when you leave the Club.
$55 per month dues, or $600 per year if paid in full in advance.
$70 per hour (tach time), including fuel, plus a fuel surcharge adjusted monthly based on $3.00/gallon avgas.
The surcharge is $1/hr for every $0.10 that fuel costs above $3/gal.
The Club credits your account for non-local fuel purchases at the price you paid up to the current Fairbanks price. Monthly billings are posted by the 10th of each month and are due by month end. You may be grounded for an overdue account until your account is up to date.

3. How do I schedule the plane?

Just access the Club's Internet-based "self-serve" reservation system at www.aircraftclubs.com. Out of state flights and extensive (twelve days or more) trips require Board approval. You'll have your own key. It's as simple as that.

4. What are my responsibilities as a member?

  • Read and heed the Club's Constitution, Bylaws, and Operating Rules.
  • Fly the plane safely, treat it responsibly, and keep it clean - all as if it were your own, because it is!
  • Make sure the plane is refueled and buttoned down upon your return to Fairbanks.
  • Stay current, per the FARs and the Club's Operating Rules. Unless you're a student pilot, you must have a current medical and BFR to fly - otherwise you're not only illegal but may not be covered by the Club's insurance.
  • Report any maintenance problems or concerns in the aircraft's log and by phone to the Maintenance Officer.
  • Cancel your reservation if unable to fly as scheduled.
  • Keep your account up to date.
  • Attend and participate in the Club's annual (and any other) meetings, and lend a hand on occasional Club projects.

5. What about insurance?

The Club carries both liability and hull insurance with Avemco with a $500 not-in-motion and $2,500 in-motion deductible. The Club member/pilot-in-command is responsible for any damage to Club property due to negligence that is not covered by the Club's insurance (including payment of the applicable deductible).

6. Who and what is the Arctic Flying Club?

Non-profit and member-owned, the Arctic Flying Club has been serving Fairbanks aviators with economical flying and flight instruction since 1969. We have an Annual Meeting each spring, as well as occasional Board of Directors meetings on an as needed basis which are open to the membership.

Our current Board of Directors is:

  • President - Brendan La Belle-Hamer;
  • Vice President - John Kenny
  • Secretary/Treasurer - Andy Anger & Barb Pierson
  • Maintenance Officer - Dave Stoller;
  • Chief Pilot - Diane McClure.

Other Directors include:

  • Craig Loudon
  • John Miller
  • Paullette Wille

7. How do I join?

Complete a Club application and send it with $250 ($200 membership fee plus $55 first month dues) to:

Arctic Flying Club
P.O. Box 72772
Fairbanks, AK 99707

The Board will review your application and get back to you as soon as possible - typically within a couple weeks from receipt of your application. If for any reason your application is denied we will promptly return your check uncashed. Our insurance policy limits us to twenty-five members (including not more than five student pilots), so if our roster is full upon approval of your application we'll advise you of your status and place you on our "first come, first fly" waiting list. Once on the Club roster you can get the required orientation/check ride from a Club-certified instructor, a key, and access to the web site to book your aircraft reservations.

8. If I have any unanswered questions, or need an application form?
